Fake clicks in Google Ads: how to spot bots and protect your budget
Every ad click costs money, whether it comes from a customer or from a bot. Spam bots, click farms and automated traffic can eat part of your budget without bringing in a single customer. Here is how to spot them and what you can do.
What invalid clicks and spam bots are
Google calls clicks that do not come from genuine interest invalid traffic: bots and botnets, click farms, proxy and data-centre traffic, accidental or duplicate clicks and, more and more, AI-driven bots.
Spam bots are bots that visit sites or submit forms in bulk with no purchase intent. They distort your statistics even when they do not cost money directly.
How much budget can you lose
Estimates vary. Protection vendors talk about 11–20% invalid clicks in search campaigns and over 30% in expensive niches such as local or legal services. These are company estimates, not official Google data, so measure your own traffic before drawing conclusions.
How to recognise bots in your ads
- Sessions under 5 seconds with no interaction (movement, scrolling, touch).
- Many visits in bursts from the same network or the same IP range.
- Click spikes with no conversions and locations that do not match your targeting.
- Automated browsers: automation markers, software GPU, no languages or no screen.
- Identical form submissions or unknown referrers.
How to protect yourself, in layers
- Measure real visits. Our snippet records every visit from ads on your site (GCLID, source, page) and labels it as a person, bot, spam bot or verified crawler.
- Separate bots from people by technical signals and behaviour, not by user agent, which bots can fake.
- Exclude the safe networks. In Google Ads you can exclude up to 500 IPs or /24 networks per campaign. We only suggest networks that never sent a person, so you do not lose customers.
- Send the evidence to Google. The "Click quality" form asks for the date and time of the clicks, the campaign and the IPs or GCLIDs, for the last 60 days, and only the account administrator can submit it.
- Clean your statistics. Take bots out of your reports so your decisions rest on real people.

Frequently asked questions
Do I get my money back for invalid clicks?
Google issues credits for invalid traffic it detects, and through the Click quality form you can request an investigation for the last 60 days. The review takes a few weeks and approval is not guaranteed.
Can I block every bot IP?
Not always. Many mobile networks are shared by thousands of people, and bots use residential proxies. That is why we only exclude networks that never sent a person.
What is the difference between spam bots and crawlers?
Legitimate crawlers such as Googlebot index your site and are verified through DNS. Spam bots visit or submit forms with no legitimate purpose.
